Cutback Bitumen.
Cutback bitumen is a particular type of bitumen that has been mixed with a solvent to reduce its viscosity and make it workable at lower temperatures. The lower viscosity is achieved by dissolving the bitumen in a solvent which will later evaporate after the material has been applied. Therefore, the softer the bitumen after addition of the solvent, the more viscous it will be once the solvent evaporates. This release process and the nature of the solvent used categorize cutback bitumen into three types: rapid-curing, medium-curing, and slow-curing. The following section introduces physical and chemical properties of cutback bitumen.
Cutback BitumenPhysical and chemical information
Physical properties
• Variety: cutback bitumen has its primary quality in a reduced viscosity that allows easier application in a project by lowering working conditions.
• Setting time: it varies depending on the bitumen type, where rapid-curing takes place once the solvent has already vaporized and the fumes have dissipated, whereas slow curing can set over several weeks.
• Penetration: this value is directly proportional to the depth a standard needle can enter in the given conditions and is instrumental in assessing hardness or intensity of a material.
• Softening point: a temperature when the bitumen starts softening and moving.
Chemical composition
• base bitumen- asphaltenes, resins, natural oils form a compound that provides bitumen with basic binding qualities and other functions.
• Solvents are also significant and divided into three groups that influence the repair times and other applicability measures. Rapid-curing is performed with naphtha or gasoline, very volatile. Medium curing is a kerosene, less violent. Slow curing uses diesel oil, least volatile, and takes a long time to evaporate.
The countries that produce cutback bitumen include major producers:
Iran - a big producer and exporter of different grades of bitumen, e.g. cutback bitumen
Saudi Arabia : Utilisation of its huge oil reserves and state-of-the art refining infrastructure to manufacture quality, superior grade cutback bitumen.
United Arab Emirates (UAE): UAE is a significant source of bitumen production in the Middle East providing from local to global markets.
India: India is another big producer and exporter of cutback bitumen due to its expanding refining capacity.
RUSSIA: Harnessing its large reserves of crude oil and natural gas to manufacture a range of bituminous products which include cutback bitumen.
USA: Famous for producing cutback bitumen of high quality meeting a wide range of applications standards.
Grades of Cutback Bitumen
Different types of cutback bitumen are referred to as rapid-curing (RC), medium-cutting (MC) and slow-couting. There are many grades of each type, identified by viscosity and the specific applications for which they were literally formulated.
Rapid-Curing (RC) Grades:
RC-70: Viscosity Quick set/low viscosity
Application: Tack Coats and Sealers
RC-250: Viscosity: Viscosity of an average.
Application: Penetration macadam and prime coats.
RC-800: Viscosity: Higher viscosity.
Application: Dense Graded Aggregates.
RC-3000: Viscosity: Highest viscosity.
Recommended Use: High Traffic Pavement Applications
Medium-Curing (MC) Grades:
MC-30: Viscosity: Ultra-Low Viscosity.
Function: Prime coat for granular bases.
MC-70: Viscosity: Low viscosity.
Applications: Varnish, though as light surface treatment.
MC-250: Viscosity: Medium (Neide)
Applications: Used in cold and dry maintenance mixes.
MC-800: Viscosity: Higher viscosity.
Usage: Stockpile patching.
MC-3000: Viscosity: Highest viscosity.
Used for: Stabilization of base courses
Slow-Curing (SC) Grades:
SC-70: Viscosity: Low viscosity.
Applications: Dust Suppressant, Light Prime Coat.
SC-250: Viscosity: Low to moderate viscous product
Usage: Prime coats.
SC-800: Viscosity: Higher viscosity.
Utilization: Mud stabilization of dirt roads.
SC-3000: Viscosity: Highest viscosity.
Uses: Heavy Prime coats and Stabilization
Industrial and Other Usage
Cutback bitumen is efficient on various industrial and other applications because of its versatile properties, ease of application at lower temperatures.
Road construction and maintenance.
Use: Prime Coats- These are installed over granular bases to bond loose particles and provide a solid surface for the asphalt layer. This is the MS-30 or SC-70 which are used for this sort of thing.
Tack Coats -These are applied between asphalt layers to bond them together. The common thing you will see is the use of an RC-70 for tack coats.
Surface Treatments - Application of protective wear course and resurfacing over new or existing pavement, such as chip seals and fog seal972 miles RC-250 & MC-70 are more common.
Cold Mix Asphalt-An asphalt mixture which is used for road ( high way) maintenance and repair Due to dificulties of using hot-mix concrete in Karachi. On the other half MC-250 is generally used for CMB operations.
Dust Control SC-70 & -250 are excellent products to control dust on unpaved roads making travel more safe and reducing maintenance.
Waterproofing:
As a damp-proof membrane for foundations and walls, to protect the integrity of structures from moisture ingress - Damp Proofing These grades have the slowest cure time allowing it to penetrate and bond well with SC grade block walls.
Roofing: Manufactured into roofs felt and other waterproof materials, provides long-lasting weather-resistant roofing solutions.
Pipeline Coatings:
Cutback BitumenCoating of pipelines to protect them from corrosion and environmental degradation is another application. So the flexibility, and adhesion property of bitumen makes it best for this cause especially in conditions with environmental objections.
Insulation:
In industrial uses, cutback bitumen is utilized as an insulating material for tanks and pipes etc. It is a perfect choice for insulation as it has thermal stability and resists to environment.
Sealants and Adhesives:
Sealants : It is used in sealing joints of concrete structures, bridges, it pot flexible and expansion joint applications. Cutback bitumen is an excellent and durable waterproofing material providing flexibility.
Adhesives : Cutback Bitumen is used in Adhesive for Roofing material, Tiles and Insulation board etc... It is an efficient adhesive due to its strong bonding nature and heat resistant behaviour.
Protective Coatings:
When applied to steel and concrete surfaces as a protective coating, cutback bitumen provides corrosion protection which is efficient in improving the longevity of infrastructure that remain exposed under harsh conditions. This app is especially valuable in industrial & coastal atmospheres.
Sports Tracks & Playgrounds;
Established as building material for sports tracks, playgrounds and others), cutback bitumen enables to form a bright resistant surface which has the ability to withstand significant loads from playing children functionalities of sites.
Conclusion
Cutback bitumen is a very useful material well known for little particles and easy to use as due reduces temperature the applications of cut-backs like paints, sealing backs war operations.
Classification of cutback bitumen is based on their viscosity and curing rate which results in when to use a certain type that provides the most value as per need concerning various types, ranging from road construction & maintenance activities to waterproofing;warm insulation& protective coatings.
Producers of cutback bitumen include Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE in the Middle East; India; Russia - which mainly exports to Africa as its refinery network is geared towards producing high-sulphur residuum more suitable for conversion instead of further processing into refined products (Cutbacks are produced from simple distillation);
